Sarah Moon and the Photographers Gallery, London

On Thursday I had an interview for a studio assistant position in London. After applying for so many jobs it's a relief to actually get an interview, regardless of whether I get it or not. I can just tell these next few months are going sole destroying but I give myself until the end of September, then I might just give in and go traveling for awhile. Or at least go back to new york for a few weeks. Visa or no visa.

Whilst in London I took the opportunity to go to the Photographers Gallery, something I always try to do when in London. The exhibition on at the moment is “fresh faced & wild eyed2010”. All the photographs are recent graduates from around the country. I was actually surprised by the uni's that a lot of them had come from. For example, Thi Bui studied at Southampton Solent University, some where that I haven’t heard the best things about. As well as Solent, Bolton and Coventry there were many people from the major art schools of London such as the Royal College of Art, London College of Communication and Camberwell. Although there was some fantastic pieces of work in the exhibition such as Briony Campbell’s “The Dad Project” I wasn’t overly impressed with the selection of work. I felt that in places the statements were a little weak, but this could be because I am graduating from a school that focuses so much on the conceptual and theory.

One of the main reason’s that I visit the Photographers Gallery is for the amazing bookshop. I am a bit of a geek when it comes to photography books and magazines and will happily spend way too much money and time in them. This time I limited myself to the BJP and Aperture as well a little Thames & Hudson’s “photo file” on Sarah Moon.

I only discovered Sarah Moon a few months ago when it was recommend that I look at her work due to my own project. I'm not a fan of most fashion photography but I really like Moon. I really feel that the style of photography really suits the style of fashion photographed. She produces images that are as delicate and elegant as the fashion she photographs. She Like many of my own images, she focuses on transience with an ethereal style.
