So the time has come that I should start applying for jobs/internships. OH JOY. Well actually the time to do this came awhile back and I have been doing it ever since, but only in the last few weeks has it properly kicked in. I feel like I have been filling in application form after email follow up after application form.
I would love to do another internship in New York, but I need one that pays this time and finding one of those is slightly impossible. The ones that do pay are at galleries like the MOMa and Met, which I fully intend to apply for but the competition is tough and although I have some experience, that is all I have: some. And the ones that don't pay, well they don't pay. That is the only issue. Well that and I need to brush up on my Photoshop skills and other such software, one of the issues of using film and printing your work yourself is the lack of photoshop practise. (Sitting on the bookshelf next to me is a beast of a book on the joy of the photoshop. Have I ever open this book....??? Once, maybe twice in first year when Ian, our photoshop guy suggested that we use it for something other than a doorstop. Although the pages may be slightly fused together I can at least I say I have never used it as a doorstop...) Plus there is the small issue of getting a visa, which I can only get with sponsorship and the US government like to know you have some form of money to support yourself. And I don't.
So I have given in and started to concentrate my efforts on finding internships at London galleries and photo agencies, the majority of these are unpaid but that's not so much of an issue because I will be working over the summer anyway, plus when I'm back at home I'm only about 50 minutes from London by train.
So on Thursday I had an interview for quite a well known photography gallery in London, I think it went really well but they needed someone to start straight away. Being located in the East Midlands currently proves a problem at this moment in time, I can't afford to get the train down to London 2 or 3 times a week. BUT she did say she would contact me in June to let me know what the galleries plans are for the summer. I think she genuine in the interest in the my experiences from the galleries in New York and was pretty positive towards me. So I guess that's something?!
I really want to find a internship for the Summer, as I hope to move to London sometime in September. I had sworn I wouldn't go back to my summer job this year but money is dragging me back and in reality it is the best thing to do; work there for the summer and attempt to save some money whilst interning 2 or 3 days a week. That way I am networking and hopefully some kind of job might come out of it by the time I move to London. We can only hope.
I have also applied for an MA program through the Museum Association, it offers a year long paid placement at a museum or gallery, or they pay for your MA and provide a shorter internship before or after you complete the MA. The idea of this is for people from lower income backgrounds or who support themselves. Seeing as there is no way I can afford to study a MA at the moment and would love to do one I thought it was worth a go at applying. Who knows what will happen.
So here is the much loved Photoshop book, the picture was taken on my phone so that explains the rubbishness of it. Martin Evening I am sure your a lovely interesting guy, but your book is not for me. It's not you, it's photoshop.
